Our Humanitarian Work

Our philosophies reach much further than our 29 acres…

For many years, the Sungoma Art Center has been doing humanitarian work internationally. Here’s just a few of the notable things that we have done lately….

Sungoma Helped Tsunami Victims Family in Trinkomali

Sungoma spent $3,000 to purchase  a three wheel tuk tuk to gain employment for the father of a family residing in the tsunami village in Sri Lanka.

Sungoma Provided Food, Money and Laptop Computers to Tsunami Victims

This is the widow of medical student who was killed accidentally by Singalese army in the civil war in Sri Lanka. She is next to her daughter, both dressed in their best. Her husband was killed with only one year left in medical school before becoming a doctor. As she has a daughter and the endowment system she will remain a single widow for the rest of her life. Sungoma supplied money, food and a laptop computer in spring which is the hardest time for them as crops are being planted and food is scarce. They live in a small house with mud floors close to the tsunami village.

The Onion Farmer

We repurchased/paid off a loan of 1,000 dollars that was held against his property when borrowed for medical expenses before his wife died. Russell Davies, the owner of the Sungoma Art Center, stayed with this hard working onion farmer who was prevented from working the field while this loan was in place – a method used to pretty well steal his property. We also supplied a new kerosene water pump to irrigate.
